Since the Kansas City Film Jubilee, I have been supporting Katia Louise, President of  the Wild for Life Foundation in her crusade to save horses from cruel slaughter. Her Documentary: Saving America’s Horses, was one of the films I covered in the Buzzworthy blog as part of the Social Media Club of Kansas City’s efforts to promote the jubilee.

taxation, cruelty to animals, horses, Equines,Katia, and her passion for saving these great animals from senseless and illegal slaughter on US land is at a critical point as highlighted by the passage of The Moran Amendment! The Amendment imposes a ban on the spending of taxpayer dollars for USDA inspection of horses that was lifted in 2011, and will now be part of the House version of the Agriculture budget. The bill is set for a full House vote this Tuesday June 26th. The addition of the Moran Amendment to the farm bill is a major upset for the proponents of horse slaughter that were aggressively pushing to open new slaughterhouses in the U.S. this year. The protective language was lifted from an annual appropriations bill last year when it reached the Senate and a special conference committee of just four individuals, and Senators Blunt and Kohl and Congressman Kingston voted to drop the language. Had the entire Senate voted on the amendment last year, it would have no doubt passed. Notice Missouri Senator Blunt is included in Katia’s list of our elected official who, under the guise of job creation, are trying to skirt the will of the American people who have voted to stop this tragic slaughter. Katia goes on to say in an open email:

“As we continue our diligent pursuit of justice and to bring the truth to the mainstream, we will keep close watch on this bill and the related activities.” She adds, “Today’s important victory marks a turn in the tides but we must stay vigilant in our efforts to insure that America’s horses are adequately protected from insidious slaughter. Until a federal law is passed to ban the slaughter of America’s horses, they will continue to be shipped across federal borders for horsemeat which is sold as a delicacy overseas. We at Wild for Life Foundation believe that America’s horses deserve to be protected and the public deserves to know the truth.  There is still much work to do. We must continue to stand strong, stay united and keep the pressure on. If you haven’t yet done so, please take a moment to sign the Pledge to help Stop Equine Cruelty. Change happens when we stand together to fight for America’s equines.”

Your state representatives need to hear from YOU, their constituents, to help insure that they stand strong representing your voice, your position against horse slaughter. Maintaining the currently included defunding language prohibits inspections of horse slaughter and is vital to protecting our horses. See your Representative’s past votes on the issue by: http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2005/roll233.xml Please call 1st thing Monday!!  You can call the main Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to your state Representative’s office. Bucksville, set in a Northwestern small town, starts out looking like a poster child for left-wing gun control and ends up being something quite different. Directed by Chel White, Bucksville movies quickly to establish the film’s perceived theme: Paramilitary militias, that many fear lurk in small and rural towns across America, are just waiting to dole-out their own brand of righteousness with a blind allegiance to a shadowy figure known only as “The Patron”.

White keeps the action moving and the tension building as young begin to challenge old and moral questions begin to create fractures in the all-important wall of secrecy that permeates such groups. But the Bucksville boys aren’t your typical group, sure there are lots of guns and camouflage , but I believe I only counted three shots fired at anything other than a target in practice.

It’s the ripping apart of families and the stunting of emotional maturity such traumatic events create where White’s direction, the actors, and the script shine. Bucksville is a very good film, with beautiful cinematography. It gives and takes on many levels; fear, hope, love, hate, friendship, and redemption. There is a second screening of Bucksville today (Saturday) at the AMC Mainstreet 1400 Main next to Power & Light in downtown Kansas City at 4:00pm. It is a perfect day to sit back and relax in AMC’s new Lounge-style seating complete with extending leg rests!

Four hours of film has been painstakingly and lovingly restored as part of an incredible effort underway to bring back to life over 700 HOURS of Jazz performances spanning more than three decades of work beginning in the 30’s.

The sound quality was absolutely incredible and for anyone who loves old movies or the thought of experiencing a journey through time with both

Kansas City and all of America’s great Jazz performances this is a not-to-miss experience! After the Jazz Film showing, Greg Carroll and Ronald McFadden did a great a great Q&A.

Continuing our series:  10 Keys to the New Dynamics of Business in America, we cover the 10 Keys and define the BIG FOUR.

  1. It’s all in the Numbers!
  2. For the first time, four generations (soon to be FIVE), are working side-by-side in America. So what?
  3. Millennial or Gen Y represents a New Paradigm in Generational Thinking.
  4. History Does Repeat Itself…Lead, Follow, or Get the Hell Out of the Way!
  5. Understanding THE BIG FOUR:
  6. Leadership
  7. Managing
  8. Coaching
  9. Mentoring
  10. Designing a New Way Forward – Your Own!

There is an undeniable shift underway in how business in America is being conducted. No matter what generation you are “in” understanding THE BIG FOUR and how each impacts us, all of us, every day will help you in both life and business relationships.  And, how understanding the underpinnings of this shifting dynamic may well be the difference between success and failure. For a more thorough review of the generations, there is a link at the end of today’s post.

  1. It’s all in the numbers. There is much debate on all but the Boomer generation but here are our generational groups: The Mature Generation: Over 50 million members still active in the workforce and born before 1946. The Boomers: Representing 76 million, born between 1946 and 1964. The first generation to redefine society and business in America by sheer numbers. Gen X: Numbering 50 million, adults born between 1965 and 1976, the most connected generation ever. The Millennium generation, or Gen Y: Born between 1977 and 1994, over 70 million strong and the most educated, diverse, technology savvy and soon-to-be largest American generation in the workforce. Gen Z: Born between 1995 and 2004, already gearing up as another game changing generation, Gen Z will move into the workforce faster than Gen Y.
  2. Members of four generational groups are already working side-by-side (not necessarily together), in most businesses and verticals representing every level of business. From the proverbial mail room to the board room, you will find more diversity than ever before. And this isn’t just age diversity it is ethnic, racial, and lifestyle diversity. The technology boom and bust cycles over the last 20 years along with a seismic shift from a manufacturing to service-based economy have created opportunities and challenges for members of each and every group. And frankly, these challenges and opportunities reflect a Buzzworthy mantra, predating

    Change

the first dotcom bust: You Must Change Now! Like the plates of the earth’s crust, these generations are pressed against each other in the social and business landscape. And increasingly, these interactions are creating friction and pressure leading to tremors that, left unchecked, will become destructive quakes, crumbling relationships and destabilizing businesses.

  3. The Millennials or Gen Y are at the epicenter of this seismic activity in society and business.  They are the fastest growing demographic in the American workforce. They are also much more segmented in their likes and dislikes. And, they are definitely NOT afraid to share their opinions – good and bad (in 140 characters or less). Communication is a key differentiator as well. Never before has a generation had the ability to communicate so quickly and with such impact. Twitters’ 140 characters has come to define the length of communication (and seemingly the attention spans), of many Millennials! And, here’s a shocker, Millennials represent a New Paradigm in Generational Thinking!
  4. You only have to look as far back as the Boomers to see that History is about to repeat itself. Just like the Boomers, the Millennial generation has been impacting American society since the day they were born!  And, as the fastest growing demographic entering the workforce, Gen Y is doing the same for business. The similarity with Boomers however, ends there. The Millennials entering the workforce are, like the earth’s plates, colliding with Gen X and Boomers across generational fault lines and pressure is building. If left unchecked, the impact on these fault lines will go from seismic rumblings to a full-blown quake, leaving devastation at every level of our social and business worlds.  They like to work and spend time in peer groups or teams and it’s less about fitting in and more about being heard (in a quiet, digital sort of way!).  The question is, “Are you listening?” Their buying power and influence is only going to grow, so…Lead, Follow, or Get the Hell Out of the Way!
  5. Millennials are mixing it up at all levels of business and with all demographic groups so it is critical that everyone (and that includes Millennials too), take pause and consider THE BIG FOUR. Here’s a great set of definitions we’ll be using to explore the BIG FOUR from: Coach Anyone About Anything Volume 2 (the best book on coaching I know), by two of my mentors and coaches: Germaine Porche’ and Jed Niederer.
  6. Lead’er●ship: declaring a future and enrolling people into making that future happen.
  7. Man’age●ment: coordinating people and materials to accomplish specific milestones and objectives, which will make the declared future, happen.
  8. Coach’ing: facilitating people in their own commitment and enthusiasm to accomplish their objectives.
  9. Men’tor●ing: providing instruction and orientation about an organization’s culture, people, products, services and systems.
  10. Designing a New Way Forward – Your Own! By taking the time to understand each other, involving all generational groups in the discussion and whenever possible, the decision-making process (especially when that process is about them), you’ll soon be benefiting from a much more focused, engaged, contributing and productive workforce! So, whether you are a job seeker or an employee-An entrepreneur just starting out or starting over-An established business owner, a neighborhood retailer or Fortune 500 CEO, understanding THE BIG FOUR and how to develop new strategies in this diverse, multigenerational workforce is critical to Understanding The Changing Dynamics of Business.

For all the “I can’t wait, need it now”members of the Boomer, Gen X, Millennial, and Gen Z generations, looking for instant gratification, “Like” this and I’ll send you my complete white paper: 10 Keys to the New Dynamics of Business in America.

Understanding 10 Key Points that are at the core of the New Dynamics of Business in America:

  1. It’s all in the Numbers!
  2. For the first time, four generations are working side-by-side in America. So what?
  3. Millennials represent a New Paradigm in Generational Thinking.
  4. History Does Repeat Itself…
  5. Lead, Follow, or Get the Hell Out of the Way! Understanding THE BIG FOUR:
  6. Leadership
  7. Managing
  8. Coaching
  9. Mentoring
  10. Designing a New Way Forward – Your Own!

There is an undeniable shift underway in how business in America is being conducted. No matter what generation you are “in” understanding the other generations around you will help in both life and business.  And, understanding the underpinnings of this shifting generational dynamic may well be the difference on your road to success.

Our #1 on the Top 10 List:

It’s all in the numbers. While the exact dates of when different generations start and stop is open to some debate, understanding the basics is a great place to start: With over 50 million members still active in the workforce and born before 1946, this group has been called: the Greatest, the Mature, the Traditional, and even the Silent Generation (although they are anything but silent at the polls).  The oldest Matures were shaped by: The Great Depression and World War II, the youngest; the return of the Military into society, the explosion of Suburbia, and the baby boom! Representing 76 million, the Boomer generation, born between 1946 and 1964, characterized by Ken Dychtwald’s “Age Wave,” Boomers were by far, the largest population group ever in America. Starting at birth, the Boomers have been more like a Tsunami; reshaping our country and cultural landscape. And, they will continue to do so as they live longer than any generation before. They are also staying in the workforce longer,  voting consistently (But certainly not together!), and in so doing, driving the social and business agenda. The smallest generational group, Gen X, numbering 50 million adults born between 1965 and 1976, is the most connected generation ever. Forrester Research estimates over 95 percent of Gen Xers own mobile phones and half of them are Smart Phones! For this generation, the Internet replaced the television as their medium of choice and breakdowns in culture, business and their parent’s relationships have left Gen X with a skeptical, even cynical attitude.  The Millennium generation, born between 1977 and 1994, and over 70 million strong, are the most educated, diverse, technology savvy and soon-to-be largest American generation in the workforce. Their arrival in the workforce (albeit somewhat delayed), is causing seismic fault lines along the generational landscape. The Millennials, like the earth’s plates, are colliding with Gen X and Boomers across generational fault lines and pressure is building. If left unchecked, the impact on these fault lines will go from seismic rumblings to full blown quakes, leaving devastation at every level of our social and business worlds.  And, Gen Z born between 1995 and 2004, is already gearing up as another game changing generation! As offspring of late Boomers, Gen Xers, and early Millennials, the oldest members of Gen Z are starting to shake things up and, at the same time, reinforce Point #4: History Does Repeat Itself. There is a natural ebb and flow in generational characteristics. Research has shown that one generation’s children will, in some measurable and identifiable ways, be different than their parents (Duh, of course, we all want our kids to grow up better off, brighter, more successful).  But, you might be surprised that some researchers believe this generational ebb and flow actually results in a recycling over a period of several generations. Kind of flies in the face of the concept of “Self Determination,” but that is another story and another blog.  While there are differing opinions on when generations start and stop, we will use the above parameters for our ongoing series: 10 Keys to the New Dynamics of Business in America.

Check back Tuesday for post #2: For the first time, four generations are working side-by-side in America. So what?

Well, For all the “I can’t wait, need it now” members of the Boomer, Gen X, Millennial, and Gen Z generations, looking for instant gratification, “Like” this and I’ll send you my complete whitepaper: 10 Keys to the New Dynamics of Business in America.

In our First blog in this series: Ten Things You Need to Understand About Gen Y Employees (and why you should care), we touched on the importance of the emerging Gen-Y or Millennium generation. In this second installment, we discuss the undeniable shift underway in how business in America is being conducted.  Understanding the underpinnings of this shifting dynamic may well be the difference between success and failure –

Whether you are a job seeker or an employee-

An entrepreneur just starting out or starting over-

An established business owner-

A neighborhood retailer or Fortune 500 CEO…

For the first time, four very diverse generations are working side-by-side in America and members of each of the four generations comprise the ranks of every one of the above groups. The stakes couldn’t be higher or the opportunities and challenges greater. This new dynamic is redefining business in America.

While there is some debate as to both the exact year some generational groups began or ended and how some generations are “labeled,” it is important to understand the times and events that shaped each of them. The size of the generations is also important as with some, most notably the boomer generation, the country and many of the economic and political forces that have shaped our nation over the last 30 years were borne out of the necessity to address the needs of this huge population segment.

In the late 1980’s, I was a speaker at Ken Dychtwald’s “Age Wave” conference in San Diego (loved my speaker gimme so much I still wear those 20-year old sweats, thanks Ken!). Aging Demographics was just beginning to be discussed in the mainstream media. At the time, the boomer generation was characterized by the unappetizing imagery of the US population graph as a “Pig in a Python!” Comprised of over 76 million people, the boomers were, by far, the largest age-defined demographic group in America ever!

Over the last 25 plus years, I have continued to learn, observe and share my experience and experiences on Aging Demographics and how you can’t focus on any one without a strategic plan on integrating all four. As our country has been driven to change by the need to respond to the Boomers as an economic juggernaut, this new, inter-generational workforce will redefine how business will be conducted going forward. As mentioned, there is some debate on exact years and numbers but we have chosen to define the generations as follows:

The Silent generation, born before 1946, numbering over 70 million. While actually comprised of a number of distinct generational groups, it is worth noting that when it comes to voting, there is nothing “silent” about this group. However, for our discussion of the shifting dynamics of business, only two segments of the silent generation are included: The Great generation, born between 1922 and 1927, over 10 million and in quick decline and the Post-War Cohort generation, born between 1928 and 1945, over 40 million and declining.

The Boomers, born between 1946 and 1964, numbering 76 million. The 50 plus market segment is projected to grow by 18 percent by 2022, making it the largest such percentage growth of any group of working Americans*, to approximately 122 million people.  The boomers will continue to drive the economic and political agenda in America for the near future.

Gen X, born between 1965 and 1976, number over 45 million. The Gen X generation, originally referred to as “latchkey” kids due to long hours spent absorbing television while one or both parents worked, is the smallest generation. By 1984 these latchkey kids had become known as the MTV generation reflecting the immense popularity of the show watched by over 25 percent of this music-driven generation! Gen X, as they are now commonly referred to, was the first generation truly connected by technology. This early adopter status also makes Gen X the most on-demand generation. Forrester Research estimates over 95 percent of Gen Xers  own mobile phones and half of them are Smart Phones! The Internet has replaced the television as the medium of choice, it is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year!

The Millenniums or Gen-Y, born between 1977 and 1994, number over 70 million. Much is being written about this generation. However, without careful consideration and a strategic approach, there will be a rocky road ahead! The Millennium generation or Gen Y as they are quickly becoming known is the most educated, diverse, technology savvy and soon-to-be largest American generation ever! As they join the workforce in ever increasing numbers, the members of the Gen Y generation will be doing so at all levels, joining members of the other working generations. This influx is not going smoothly…

Understanding how these diverse generations are interacting now and how each generation will continue to bring its own unique perspective to bare in four key areas, defining the business of doing business in America will be the topic of next week’s Buzzworthy Blog. “THE BIG FOUR” are:

  1. Leading
  2. Managing
  3. Coaching
  4. Mentoring

And, whether you are doing the leading, managing, coaching or mentoring or being the recipient of it, THE BIG FOUR will define The Changing Face of America’s Workforce! Subscribe or “like” the Buzzworthy blog today and be sure and read next week’s blog:  Ten Keys to Understanding the New Dynamics of Business in America as we explore THE BIG FOUR! And, why they will play an important role in every segment of American business.

*The Centennial Generation, those Americans over 100, will continue to be the fastest growing generation by sheer percentage because so few people prior to the Silent generations ever lived that long!

Born between 1977 and 1995, the Millennial or Gen-Y generation numbers almost 80 million. They are the fastest growing demographic in the US workforce.*

Effectively attracting, retaining, and developing this generation will be critical to almost every business segment.

Jason Ryan Dorsey: www.jasondorsey.com the emerging voice of the Y generation, outlined his “TOP TEN LIST” for How and Why the Gen Yers Think and Act at Work in his new book:

Y-SIZE YOUR BUSINESS

How to Maximize Your Gen-Y Employee's Potential

JASON’S TOP TEN

  1. No expectation of lifetime employment
  2. A feeling of entitlement along with big expectations
  3. A hunger for instant gratification and tangible outcomes
  4. A new relationship with technology and communication
  5. A higher tolerance for diversity of all kinds
  6. A desire to be our own boss
  7. Gen-Y decides to stay – or not – on our first day at work
  8. A need for on-going feedback
  9. A lack of real-world expertise
  10. A habit of putting our lifestyle way ahead of work

Turning these characteristics into a competitive advantage will determine whether your company benefits from the Gen-Y ‘s enthusiasm and creativity or continues to have a costly revolving door of employees who disengage rather than getting involved!

To see just what this difference means in dollars and cents, Dorsey offers a simple formula for calculating your company’s investment in Gen Y. Of course, the more accurate the numbers, the more accurate your answers will be.

STEP 1: How many Gen Y employees does your company presently have? (Employees born between 1977 and 1995): ________________________

STEP 2: What is the average compensation for Gen Y employees (include benefits, tax expense, training costs per employee, etcetera). If you don’t have accurate numbers take a guess (then make sure you find out!): ____________________

STEP 3: Multiply the number of Gen Y employees by your average compensation: __________________

For many industries, notably service-oriented ones such as hospitality and food service, the numbers, and ramifications, are HUGE! How about retail, customer service and any other customer facing jobs?

Buzz New Media's Mantra - You Must Change Now!

To consider the “big picture” take a look at your one, three or five-year plan and figure out how big a percentage of your workforce will be made up of Gen Y employees. You’ll begin to see why “YOU MUST CHANGE NOW!” Buzz New Media’s Mantra for over 10 years. Ok, a shameless plug!

Next week we will delve deeper into the issues relating to Gen Y employees and the other generations now sharing the workplace. Subscribe to the Buzzworthy Blog so you won’t miss a beat!

*Although small in overall numbers, The Centennials (those over 100), are the fastest growing segment on a percentage basis because so many people are now living past 100!
